A whole wheat sandwich requires 2oz daily.

http://www.facebook.com/SaveSchoolLunchSaveSchoolLunchhttp://www.facebook.com/SaveSchoolLunchnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5331075923952927476.post-80240174702868020682010-11-02T22:00:51.000-07:002010-11-02T22:00:51.000-07:00Hi there,

I meant to...makes you wonder why so many kids get diabetes nowadays--so many processed foods are the norm for them. So sad. I'd be really happy to see them serving simple PB&J on plain white bread like they used to over the Uncrustables.

I heard a "Splendid Table" podcast recently that featured a woman from the school lunch program in St. Paul, MN. They discussed the amount of money they were given per child for their expenses just to break even (food, labor, benefits, supplies, equipment, fuel for trucks, etc). That total dollar amount for their program is less than $3 per child - which comes down to $1 for food after all is said and done. USDA buys some things from farmers for the lunch program that are subsidized and it comes to about 20 cents per child. This is what has led the programs to purchasing processed foods for the lunches. The issue is so huge and has so many levels of politics and dysfunctional components. It is really upsetting.hkasvinskyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05006755355033388568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5331075923952927476.post-24926862758718309472010-10-31T10:00:16.385-07:002010-10-31T10:00:16.385-07:00You know, they actually serve uncrustables (and wo...You know, they actually serve uncrustables (and worse) in the elementary school lunch program - in Fairbanks. Eli took a bite once and decided they were not food but other kids who probably have never had Dave's killer bread and real peanut butter without all the additives and sugar eat them regularly.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17785681794703297846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5331075923952927476.post-37770170828456331382010-05-18T16:44:46.284-07:002010-05-18T16:44:46.284-07:00Congratulations on your beautiful, precious Little...Congratulations on your beautiful, precious Little One!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5331075923952927476.post-78505456589899444202010-05-18T16:43:31.950-07:002010-05-18T16:43:31.950-07:00Whoa. With our hoop covers for the raised beds, everything seems to stay happy even in cooler evenings. The only things I wait on are squash and bush beans because they just like it sunny and hot! We got our earliest salad yet this year: June 13th...which is great since we can't plant until June 1st here (supposedly!).hkasvinskyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05006755355033388568noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5331075923952927476.post-28075511900461516862009-06-12T09:00:02.930-07:002009-06-12T09:00:02.930-07:00How inspiring...I thought my list of starts and pl...How inspiring...I thought my list of starts and plantings was long!
